Dario Amodei is the co-founder and chief executive officer of Anthropic, the AI safety-focused company behind the Claude family of models. Born in San Francisco in 1983 to an Italian father and a Jewish mother, Amodei's early academic interests were squarely in math and physics rather than the dot-com technology boom unfolding around him during his teenage years. Early Career in AI

Amodei's path into artificial intelligence began in earnest at Baidu, where he worked alongside Andrew Ng on speech recognition systems, contributing to Deep Speech 2, a project recognized as one of MIT Technology Review's breakthrough technologies of 2016. He subsequently moved to Google Brain as a senior research scientist before joining OpenAI in 2016, where he rose to the position of Vice President of Research and played a central role in the development of GPT-2 and GPT-3.

Founding Anthropic

In December 2020, Amodei and roughly fourteen OpenAI colleagues — including his sister Daniela Amodei — left the company over disagreements about how seriously AI safety was being weighed against the push to scale model capability. The group founded Anthropic in early 2021, formalizing the new company in February of that year with $124 million in seed funding. Daniela Amodei became the company's president, while Dario took on the chief executive role.

Public Voice on AI Risk

As Anthropic has grown, Amodei has become one of the more outspoken executives in the AI industry, willing to take public positions that put him at odds with rivals, investors, and government officials. He has written publicly about the potential for AI to dramatically affect the labor market, at one point predicting that AI could eliminate a substantial share of entry-level white-collar jobs within years. In an October 2024 essay titled "Machines of Loving Grace," he laid out an optimistic vision in which advanced AI accelerates progress on disease, poverty, and scientific discovery. In a January 2026 follow-up essay, "The Adolescence of Technology," he took a more cautionary tone, outlining categories of AI risk that include misaligned model behavior, misuse by individuals seeking to cause mass harm, and misuse by powerful actors seeking to entrench political control.

Standing on Government Use of Claude

Amodei's willingness to hold firm on safety commitments has occasionally put Anthropic in direct conflict with powerful customers. In a notable 2026 episode, he declined a request from the U.S. Department of Defense to remove contractual restrictions on using Claude for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons systems, a stance that led to friction with federal officials before a court intervened in Anthropic's favor.

Recognition

Amodei has been named to Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people, appearing on the list in both 2025 and 2026, the latter alongside his sister Daniela. As Anthropic's valuation climbed into the hundreds of billions of dollars by 2026, he became one of the most closely watched executives in the technology industry — admired by some as a safety-minded counterweight to unchecked AI scaling, and criticized by others as overly cautious or self-interested in shaping AI regulation.
