The Elephant and the Clever Rabbit
A small but brilliant rabbit uses pure wit to drive away an entire herd of elephants from a lake.
In a certain forest lived a large herd of elephants, ruled by a powerful king. One year, a terrible drought struck, and every pond and river in the forest dried up completely. The elephants were desperate for water.
The elephant king set out searching and discovered a lake called Moon Lake. This lake was home to a large community of rabbits, who had dug their burrows all along its banks.
The herd of elephants rushed to the lake to drink. Their massive feet crushed many rabbit burrows underfoot, killing several rabbits. The survivors were terrified, especially since the elephants returned to drink every few days, repeating the destruction each time.
The rabbits gathered together to find a solution. Among them was an exceptionally clever rabbit named Vijaya. He declared, "I will speak to the king of the elephants myself and convince him to stay away from this lake."
Vijaya climbed to the top of a high rock where the elephant king would easily see him. When the king approached the lake, Vijaya spoke with great solemnity. "Your Majesty, I am a messenger of the Moon God. He is furious that your herd has defiled his sacred lake and killed so many of our rabbits."
The elephant king grew uneasy and asked, "How can I see this Moon God myself?" Vijaya invited him to return that night. When the elephant king looked into the lake, he saw the moon's reflection trembling on the rippling water.
"Look," said Vijaya, "see how furious and how the Moon God trembles with rage!" Frightened, the elephant king dipped his trunk into the water to beg forgiveness — but this only disturbed the water further, making the reflection shake even more violently. The king believed the Moon God's anger was growing.
Terrified, the elephant king promised that he and his herd would never come near that lake again. He immediately led his herd far away. Through nothing but cleverness, the small rabbit had saved his entire community.
Moral: The power of intelligence surpasses physical strength. Even the greatest problems can be solved through wit and cleverness.
