In a village lived a Brahmin and his wife, along with their young son. The couple had also raised a young mongoose, who had grown up alongside their child. The mongoose and the baby had become close companions, often playing together.

One day, the Brahmin's wife had to step out briefly for an errand. She laid her sleeping baby in the cradle and asked her husband to keep watch. But the Brahmin, too, became distracted by some task and stepped outside, leaving only the mongoose alone with the sleeping child.

The mongoose sat faithfully beside the cradle, watching over the baby as he always did. Suddenly, a venomous black snake slithered into the house and began moving toward the cradle, intending to bite the sleeping child.

The mongoose immediately recognized the danger and lunged at the snake. A fierce battle broke out between them. With all his strength and agility, the mongoose tore the snake apart, saving the baby's life — though in the process, his own mouth became stained with the snake's blood.

When the Brahmin's wife returned home, she saw the mongoose's bloodied mouth and immediately assumed, without thinking, that he had attacked and killed her child. In a panic of fear and rage, she grabbed a heavy vessel nearby and hurled it at the mongoose, killing him instantly.

When she rushed to the cradle in tears, she found her baby completely safe and sound, sleeping peacefully — and beside the cradle lay the dead snake. Only then did she realize that the mongoose had actually saved her child's life, and that she had killed her most loyal protector in her haste.

She was overwhelmed with grief, but it was far too late. Her hasty judgment and misunderstanding had cost the life of an innocent and devoted creature.

Moral: Never make a hasty decision without knowing the full truth. Choices made in fear or anger often cause irreparable harm.
