The Monkey and the Crocodile

Beside a river stood a tall jujube tree where a monkey lived, feasting daily on its sweet fruit. In the river below lived a crocodile, and over time the two became friends. The monkey would regularly toss some sweet fruits down to the crocodile.

The crocodile would carry these fruits home to his wife, who grew so fond of them that she began to wonder: a creature who eats such sweet fruit must surely have an equally sweet heart. She told her husband she wished to eat the monkey's heart.

The crocodile was troubled — the monkey was his friend — but to satisfy his wife, he devised a plan. He went to the monkey and said, "Friend, come visit my home today. My wife would love to meet you."

The monkey climbed onto the crocodile's back, and they set off across the river. Midway across, the crocodile confessed the truth. "Forgive me, friend, but my wife wishes to eat your heart, and I must fulfill her wish."

The monkey was alarmed, but he kept his composure and quickly responded, "You should have told me earlier! I always leave my heart behind on the tree for safekeeping. Let's turn back, and I'll fetch it for you."

Believing this, the crocodile turned around and swam back to shore. The moment they reached the riverbank, the monkey leapt nimbly back onto his tree and called down, "Foolish crocodile! Did you really think anyone's heart lives outside their body? I will never trust you again."

The crocodile realized his mistake, but it was far too late. The monkey was already safe, high up in his tree.

Moral: Quick thinking can save you even in the most dangerous situations. And when trust is broken, caution is essential — even with a close friend.
