The Talkative Tortoise
A tortoise's inability to stay quiet, even mid-flight, leads to a tragic and entirely avoidable fall.
In a certain pond lived a tortoise who was close friends with two geese. The tortoise loved to talk constantly, chattering away without pause regardless of whether the time or place was appropriate. His goose friends often warned him that excessive talking could one day land him in serious trouble, but the tortoise never changed his habit.
One year, a severe drought struck, and the pond's water level dropped dramatically. The geese said to the tortoise, "Friend, this pond is going to dry up completely soon. We can simply fly away to another pond, but how will you manage to get there?"
The worried tortoise asked, "Please take me with you — I'll surely die here alone!" The geese devised a clever solution. They found a sturdy stick and told the tortoise, "Grip the middle of this stick tightly with your mouth. We will each hold one end with our beaks and fly, carrying you all the way to the next pond."
The geese gave the tortoise a strict warning. "No matter what happens during the flight, you must not open your mouth to speak. If you do, you will fall and surely die." The tortoise promised faithfully that he would remain completely silent.
The three set off on their journey. As they flew over a village, some children below noticed this astonishing sight — two geese flying with a tortoise dangling between them! The children began shouting and laughing excitedly, "Look at that strange tortoise flying through the sky!"
True to his habitual nature, the tortoise simply couldn't resist responding. He opened his mouth to shout back angrily, "You foolish children, how dare you mock me—" But the instant he opened his mouth, he lost his grip on the stick and plummeted straight down to the ground.
The fall killed the tortoise instantly. Despite his friends' repeated warnings, his irrepressible habit of talking had ultimately cost him his life.
Moral: Knowing when to remain silent is an essential skill. The habit of talking excessively and responding to every single remark can sometimes lead to disastrous consequences.
