The Tortoise and the Hare
A slow but steady tortoise teaches an arrogant, speedy hare an unforgettable lesson about perseverance.
In a certain forest lived a hare who was extremely proud of his speed. He constantly mocked the other animals for being slow, especially a tortoise who moved at an unhurried, plodding pace.
One day, the hare taunted the tortoise once again. "You're so slow," he laughed, "you could never beat me in a race!" The tortoise didn't take offense. He simply replied, calmly, "Let's race and find out."
The hare burst out laughing but accepted the challenge anyway. All the animals of the forest gathered to watch. A starting line was drawn, and a distant tree was marked as the finish line.
The race began. The hare shot off like an arrow, while the tortoise plodded along steadily, slowly but without pause. After covering quite a distance, the hare glanced back and saw the tortoise was still far behind. "I have plenty of time," he thought, "I'll just rest a while."
The hare settled down under a shady tree and, before he knew it, drifted off to sleep. Meanwhile, the tortoise kept moving, step by step, never stopping and never resting.
When the hare finally woke up, the sun was already beginning to set. Panicking, he dashed toward the finish line as fast as he could — but when he arrived, he found the tortoise had already crossed it, and all the animals were cheering for him.
The hare realized his mistake. He apologized to the tortoise and understood just how costly arrogance and carelessness can be.
Moral: Steady effort and patience triumph over arrogance and haste. Slow and steady wins the race.
