The Washerman's Donkey

A donkey disguised as a leopard enjoys free meals in the fields — until his own nature gives him away.

In a village lived a washerman who owned a donkey. The donkey hauled heavy loads of laundry all day, every day, but the washerman fed him very little, leaving the poor creature perpetually hungry and unhappy.

One day, the washerman came across a dead leopard in the forest. An idea struck him. "If I drape this leopard's skin over my donkey," he thought, "I can send him to graze in the neighboring fields at night. The farmers will mistake him for a real leopard and be too frightened to chase him away."

He covered the donkey in the leopard skin and set him loose in a nearby field after dark. In the darkness, the donkey looked exactly like a leopard, and the field's watchmen, terrified, ran off whenever they spotted him. Night after night, the donkey grazed freely on the lush crops, eating his fill.

For a while, the trick worked beautifully, and the donkey grew plump and content. But one night, as he grazed in the field, he heard the distant call of a female donkey. Following his natural instinct, he felt an overwhelming urge to bray.

Without thinking, the donkey threw back his head and let out his real, unmistakable cry — "Hee-haw! Hee-haw!" The watchmen instantly realized that this was no leopard at all, but simply a donkey wearing a leopard's skin.

Armed with sticks and stones, the watchmen attacked the donkey at once. He was badly beaten and barely escaped with his life. His clever scheme of free, easy meals came to an abrupt and painful end.

Moral: No matter how cleverly one disguises themselves, their true nature will eventually be revealed — and actions built upon deception ultimately bring harm.
